The fraud initially cost the Sacco Sh6,852,166, before additional illicit transactions totaling Sh9,161,000 were discovered, bringing the overall loss to Sh16,013,166.

An accountant has been arrested in connection with a major fraud that saw a Sacco lose over Sh16 million, following detailed investigations by detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigation Unit (BFIU).

Amos Fikiri Ruwa, the former Sacco accountant, is accused of authorising cheque transactions from members' accounts while working with outside accomplices to execute the scam.

The fraud initially cost the Sacco Sh6,852,166, before additional illicit transactions totaling Sh9,161,000 were discovered, bringing the overall loss to Sh16,013,166.

Investigators said Ruwa worked with Mohamed Abdulrahman, a businessman and construction company director, whose cheques were cashed as part of the scheme. Funds from the Sacco were routed into accounts belonging to Abdulrahman and other unsuspecting members.

A total of 58 cheques were fraudulently issued, cleared, and deposited, highlighting the scale of the operation. Forensic analysis also uncovered forged withdrawal slips linked to Ruwa, which enabled him to siphon off parts of the money. The cheques were deliberately omitted from the Sacco’s official ledger, suggesting an effort to hide the illegal activity.

On January 17, 2026, Mohamed Abdulrahman was arrested and later presented in court. Amos Fikiri Ruwa was taken into custody on February 14, 2026, and is currently being processed ahead of his arraignment.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations, through its Banking Fraud Investigation Unit, reaffirmed its commitment to fighting fraud in financial institutions. The DCI stressed that all individuals involved in deceptive acts will be held fully accountable.
