Former world 1,500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot secured a hard-fought victory in the men's Dream Mile at the Oslo Diamond League meeting at Bislett Stadium on Wednesday evening, claiming his first Diamond League win since 2021.
Cheruiyot was the most experienced athlete in the field but faced stiff competition from some of the world's fastest milers, including U.S. Olympic 1,500m medallist Yared Nuguse, Great Britain's Jake Wightman, and fellow Kenyans Reynold Cheruiyot and Festus Lagat.
The 2019 world 1,500m champion stayed close to the leading pack throughout the race and did not appear to be the favourite for victory in the early stages. However, he produced a powerful finishing kick in the closing metres to challenge for the win.
After crossing the finish line, it was unclear whether Cheruiyot or Nuguse had emerged victorious, with the American initially celebrating what he believed was a narrow win. Moments later, the photo-finish results confirmed that Cheruiyot had claimed victory, with both athletes clocking 3:48.21.
Cheruiyot ultimately secured the win, ending a four-year wait for a Diamond League victory, while Australia's Cameron Myers completed the podium in third place with a time of 3:48.35.
