The UDA MP noted that several discussions are ongoing between Kenya and foreign partners, with some expected to unlock opportunities in areas such as renewable energy, trade and labour mobility.

Kesses MP Julius Rutto has defended President William Ruto’s foreign travel, saying Kenya risks losing investment, jobs and export opportunities if its leadership reduces engagement with the rest of the world.

Speaking during an interview on Radio Generation on Thursday, the lawmaker said the President’s work involves building international partnerships that can help grow the economy and create opportunities for Kenyan businesses and workers.

According to Rutto, global competition for markets and investors has intensified, making it necessary for Kenya to actively pursue relationships that can support economic growth.

“The president remaining in office solely because of cost pressures has its own effects. He has to travel to seek partners and create opportunities for the country’s products,” Rutto said.

The UDA MP noted that several discussions are ongoing between Kenya and foreign partners, with some expected to unlock opportunities in areas such as renewable energy, trade and labour mobility.

He said young Kenyans stand to benefit from arrangements being explored with countries that have established maritime industries, opening up employment opportunities in the seafaring sector.

Rutto further pointed to Norway as one of the countries offering potential areas of cooperation, particularly in green energy and investment, adding that such engagements often require direct involvement at the highest level of government.

He maintained that the presidency plays an important role in representing the country internationally and should not be restricted to local engagements alone.

“The president has to move out. We cannot limit that office. Without that, we don’t have opportunities. We cannot be isolated,” he said.

While supporting the President’s foreign engagements, the MP stressed the need for careful planning and accountability whenever official delegations travel abroad.

He said government teams should include professionals with the expertise needed to support negotiations and ensure agreements reached during foreign visits produce measurable results for the country.

According to Rutto, well-managed international engagements can help Kenya attract investment, secure new markets and expand employment opportunities, especially for young people entering the job market.

His remarks come as President Ruto begins a tour of Europe aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic ties with key partners.

During the visit, the Head of State is expected to travel to Belgium, Finland and Norway for bilateral talks, meetings with investors and participation in business forums focused on manufacturing, clean energy, trade and value addition.

The tour is part of Kenya’s efforts to widen access to international markets, attract more foreign capital and strengthen economic cooperation with strategic partners across Europe.
