The newly completed port welcomed 249 international passengers, marking its formal entry into the global cruise circuit.

Shimoni Port in Kenya’s South Coast achieved a major milestone on October 27, 2025, after receiving its first-ever cruise vessel, the luxury liner SH Diana, in what is being hailed as a turning point for cruise tourism in the region.

The newly completed port welcomed 249 international passengers, marking its formal entry into the global cruise circuit.

The vessel was received by port officials, county leaders and key tourism stakeholders during a colourful ceremony that underscored the county’s growing profile as a coastal destination.

The arrival of SH Diana, a regular caller to Mombasa and Lamu, signals increasing confidence in Shimoni as an emerging stop for luxury liners, and further positions the South Coast as a competitive cruise hub.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Acting Manager for Corporate Communication,  Dave Jones Buchere, who represented Managing Director Captain William Ruto, said the historic docking reflects the government’s commitment to expanding Kenya’s cruise tourism potential.

“Shimoni Port has elevated Kwale’s potential for cruise tourism, reflecting the government’s commitment to expanding the sector which is among the fastest growing tourism segments in the country,”  Buchere said.

He added that the port’s strategic location near key marine attractions will spur economic growth and unlock new livelihood opportunities for local communities.

“The facility will stimulate job creation, investment in hospitality and community-based tourism initiatives that will uplift the livelihoods of residents,” he added.

During their call, passengers aboard SH Diana explored some of Kwale’s top attractions including Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park, Wasini Island and historical coastal sites.

The South Coast continues to draw international attention, with its beaches having been ranked ‘Best in Africa’ for five consecutive years by the World Travel Awards.

The welcoming ceremony brought together a multi-sector team including the County Government of Kwale, led by Governor Hon. Fatma Achani, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and other government agencies, all reaffirming their collaboration in boosting cruise tourism and strengthening Kwale’s destination appeal.

The inaugural call by SH Diana now sets the pace for Shimoni’s role in widening Kenya’s blue economy footprint and attracting more cruise traffic to the South Coast in the years ahead.
