Authorities have stepped in following troubling accounts that a foreign national allegedly engaged in intimate relations with Ghanaian women, filmed the encounters, and shared the recordings without their approval, with government insisting the case is being handled with the seriousness it deserves.
In a statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in Ghana, the Ministry said it has taken note of the matter and is closely monitoring developments.
Initial details indicate that the person at the centre of the allegations may no longer be within Ghana’s borders. However, the Ministry stressed that this does not lessen the weight of the claims or the duty of the State to act.
“The non-consensual recording and distribution of intimate images is a criminal offence and a clear violation of dignity and privacy.”
The Ministry explained that steps to address image-based sexual abuse were already underway before the current reports emerged. It said it has been working with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Innovations and its agencies to strengthen digital safety efforts.
These include working with online platforms, improving reporting systems, and ensuring harmful content can be taken down swiftly. The same structures are now being used in relation to this case.
It further disclosed that collaboration is ongoing with the Ghana Police Service, other security bodies, and international partners to review all lawful paths available. This may involve cross-border engagement and mutual legal assistance if required.
Support for those affected is being arranged discreetly. The Ministry said psychosocial services and legal help are being coordinated through confidential channels to safeguard privacy and well-being. It also reminded the public that toll-free numbers remain open for complaints, enquiries, and reports of abuse or violence.
The helplines are 0800-800-800, 0800-900-900, and 0800-111-222.
While investigations and related processes continue, the Ministry urged the public to be mindful of their conduct and interactions, both in digital spaces and in person.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protect the rights, safety, and dignity of all persons and to ensure that jurisdictional barriers do not stand in the way of appropriate action.
