Africa Aquatics has confirmed that Kenya will not host the upcoming 2026 Africa Aquatics Swimming Championships. Instead, Algeria will host the event in the port city of Oran from May 5 to 10 this year.
The decision follows the withdrawal of Ghana, which was the initial host.
In a communication sent to member federations and seen by Radio Generation on Wednesday, Africa Aquatics said the championships will proceed on the original dates despite the late change of venue.
Kenya had been mentioned among possible replacement hosts, largely due to its central location and the availability of a long-course swimming facility that meets international standards. The championships have attracted 44 countries.
Ghana’s withdrawal came after the Ghana Swimming Association pulled out of hosting duties due to governance-related challenges, which affected preparations. This prompted Africa Aquatics to move quickly to identify an alternative host and avoid disruption to the calendar.
Competition in Oran will cover junior, senior, and masters categories, maintaining the structure used in previous editions.
With the venue now settled, focus now shifts to final preparations as federations across the continent turn their attention to what is expected to be a competitive and well-attended championship.
