Andy Robertson will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, bringing to a close a nine-year spell that helped return the club to the summit of English and European football. The club confirmed on Thursday that the left-back’s contract will not be renewed, marking the end of an era for one of their most reliable performers.
The 32-year-old has featured 373 times for Liverpool, playing a central role in a team that lifted two Premier League titles and the Champions League under Jurgen Klopp. His consistency, work rate, and attacking output made him a key figure during one of the club’s most successful periods in recent history.
This season, however, Robertson has slipped down the pecking order following the arrival of Milos Kerkez. With his deal set to expire at the end of the campaign, the club opted against offering an extension, paving the way for his departure.
Robertson becomes the second major name set to leave Anfield in the coming months after Mohamed Salah also confirmed he will exit at the end of the season.
Reflecting on his time at the club, Robertson spoke emotionally about his journey.
"I'll always look back on amazing memories at this football club, I’ve put my heart and soul into the club for nine years and I’ve not got many regrets," said Robertson.
"I've grown as a man and as a person. This club will always mean the world to me, the fans will mean the world to me. It has been a hell of a journey."
Liverpool’s current campaign has fallen far below expectations, less than a year after they last won the league title. The season has also been overshadowed by tragedy, with Robertson mourning the loss of close friend and teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in July.
On the pitch, new manager Arne Slot has struggled to settle an expensive squad, with Liverpool sitting fifth in the Premier League standings. Their domestic and European hopes have also taken a hit, including a heavy 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City and a 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Robertson’s journey at Anfield stands out as one of the standout success stories of Klopp’s tenure. Signed from relegated Hull City for £8 million in 2017, he quickly won over supporters and became a regular starter in a dominant side.
His attacking influence from defence placed him among the league’s most productive players in his position, with only former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold recording more assists among defenders in Premier League history.
During his time at Liverpool, Robertson added several major honours to his collection, including the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup, alongside league and European titles.
Despite confirming his departure, Robertson remains focused on finishing the season strongly.
"I’m still fully focused on trying to end this season as positively as possible, to help these lads and to try to give a few more good moments to the fans," added Robertson.
"That’s my aim and hopefully then we can do it and maybe closer to the end of the season you’ll have me down a camera crying my eyes out."
