The embassy warned that “national presidential and parliamentary elections in Tanzania are ongoing” and that “there are reports of country-wide demonstrations resulting in outbreaks of violence and roadblocks.”

The US Embassy in Tanzania has issued a security alert for American citizens as the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections are marred by violent demonstrations, roadblocks, and an ongoing internet blackout disrupting communication across the nation.

In an advisory released on Thursday, the embassy warned that “national presidential and parliamentary elections in Tanzania are ongoing” and that “there are reports of country-wide demonstrations resulting in outbreaks of violence and roadblocks.”

According to the alert, some major roads, including the main road leading to Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, have been closed, significantly affecting movement within and around the capital.

The embassy described the situation as fluid and potentially dangerous, urging all U.S. citizens in Tanzania to exercise heightened caution.

“Avoid demonstrations. Avoid crowds. Keep a low profile. Monitor local media for updates. Be aware of your surroundings,” the advisory stated.

The security alert also noted that a “widespread internet blackout” is making communication difficult, complicating efforts for travelers and residents to access timely updates or contact emergency services.

The blackout has reportedly affected social media platforms and messaging services, limiting information flow during a critical political period.

U.S. citizens in the country have been encouraged to stay informed through trusted local media and official embassy updates while avoiding all protest areas and congested locations.

The embassy emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant, particularly in urban centers where tensions are running high.

For those in need of assistance, the advisory provided direct contact information for the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam, located on 686 Old Bagamoyo Road in Msasani.

Citizens can reach the embassy by calling +255-22-229-4000 or visit the official website at https://tz.usembassy.gov.

The US State Department also reminded citizens to use its emergency contact lines at 888-407-4747 or 202-501-4444 for urgent consular assistance.

Additionally, Americans in Tanzania are strongly encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time alerts and facilitate communication with embassy officials in case of emergency.

“U.S. citizens should remain cautious and prioritize safety until the situation stabilizes,” the embassy stressed, adding that updates will continue to be shared through its social media platforms on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

The advisory highlights growing international concern over the tense electoral atmosphere in Tanzania, where demonstrations have disrupted daily life and heightened fears of further instability.

The situation in Tanzania is dominated by widespread protests and political unrest following the October 29 general election. The election was preceded by a government crackdown on opposition parties, human rights activists, and journalists.
