A coordinated security operation across Kenya’s Coast has led to the arrest of six suspected gang members, in what authorities describe as a major step toward restoring order in areas recently hit by violent attacks and drug-related crime.
The operation, carried out by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, targeted criminal groups operating in Mombasa, Kilifi County and Kwale County. The suspects are believed to be linked to the notorious “panga boys,” a group commonly associated with machete attacks and intimidation in coastal towns.
According to the DCI, the arrests followed actionable intelligence gathered over time, allowing officers to identify and move in on individuals suspected to be at the center of violent and drug-related activities.
“Safety is steadily being reinforced across Kenya’s Coast following a coordinated crackdown by security agencies,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said.
“Acting on actionable intelligence, detectives executed targeted operations against profiled gang members linked to violent attacks.”
Those arrested have been identified as Nicholas Mumba Chisiwa, Haniff Iqbal Sharbaz, Salim Mafuko Hamis, Ali Musa Mwachimwandi, Sadik Hamis Mwanzembe and Samuel Gitonga.
During the raids, detectives recovered several crude weapons and narcotic substances. Authorities say the items seized back earlier intelligence linking the suspects and their associates to acts of violence and drug trafficking within the region.
“The recoveries corroborate prior intelligence assessments linking the suspects and their networks to both violent intimidation and drug-related activities,” the DCI said.
“The seizure of weapons alongside narcotics highlights the compound threat posed by these organized criminal elements to public order and community safety.”
All six suspects are currently undergoing processing as investigations expand to cover other incidents believed to be connected to the same networks. Detectives say several related cases remain under active review.
“All suspects are currently undergoing processing as detectives advance investigations into multiple related incidents that remain under active review,” DCI Kenya confirmed.
“Security agencies maintain heightened vigilance and continue to pursue remaining members and facilitators of these criminal cells to ensure sustained security across the Coast region.”
Security agencies have indicated that the crackdown marks the beginning of a sustained campaign aimed at dismantling organized gangs that have caused fear among residents in recent weeks.
Communities in parts of the Coast have reported a rise in machete attacks, threats and drug-related disturbances, leading to growing concern over safety. In some towns, residents say insecurity had begun to affect businesses and limit social activities, with many people avoiding movement at certain hours.
Authorities say the current strategy focuses on intelligence-led policing, targeting not only those directly involved in attacks but also the wider operational networks that enable such crimes. By disrupting both leadership and support structures, security teams aim to weaken the gangs’ ability to plan and carry out further violence.
Community leaders have welcomed the arrests, describing them as timely and necessary to restore calm. Many residents have expressed relief, noting that repeated incidents had created anxiety and disrupted daily life.
The DCI has urged members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities. Citizens can call 0800 722 203 toll-free or send WhatsApp messages to 0709 570 000 to share information anonymously.
“These operations are ongoing,” DCI Kenya said, encouraging the public to remain vigilant. “Usiogope!”
Authorities maintain that operations will continue until all members and collaborators of the criminal networks are brought to justice, with the broader goal of ensuring long-term peace and safety across the Coast region.
