A field day in Garissa on Saturday brought together farmers, cooperatives, and agribusiness stakeholders to promote climate-smart agriculture, improved nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods in arid and semi-arid areas.
The event, held under the theme “Farm to Market: Creating Stronger Agricultural Supply Chains,” attracted about 3,000 farmers and livestock keepers from Dadaab, Balambala, Lagdera, Fafi, Garissa Township, and Ijara sub-counties.
Governor Nathif Jama said the field day reflects the county’s integrated approach to agriculture, health, nutrition, and social protection.
He noted that sustainable livelihoods are key to building resilient communities.
“Sustainable livelihoods are critical to improving nutrition, resilience, and the overall well-being of our communities,” Governor Jama said.
He added that Garissa County remains committed to supporting climate-smart agricultural practices and market access for farmers.
The Farmers’ Field Day was organized in partnership with the Kuza Jamii Project, which supports shock-responsive systems linking agriculture, health, and social protection. The project focuses on improving nutrition outcomes, expanding access to healthcare services, and strengthening household resilience against climate and economic shocks.
Participants showcased best practices in livestock management, agribusiness development, and cooperative models. They explored ways to strengthen agricultural value chains and improve access to markets.
Several local cooperatives exhibited their products and shared lessons from their experiences, including the Dadaab Safi Women Milk Cooperative Society, Dadaab Mercy Cooperative Society, and the Garissa Camel Milk SACCO.
Garissa Township Member of Parliament Rtd. Maj. Dekow Barrow said the forum provided a critical platform for farmers to connect with markets and exchange knowledge.
“The Kuza Jamii II Farmers’ Field Day has brought together farmers, cooperatives, and agribusiness stakeholders to showcase their products, share knowledge, and build strong market linkages,” Barrow said.
“Such initiatives are vital for strengthening agricultural value chains and promoting sustainable livelihoods across the region.”
The Field Day is expected to contribute to improved food security, increased incomes for farming households, and stronger collaboration between farmers, cooperatives, and development partners in Garissa County.
