Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has safely guided two lionesses that had strayed outside Nairobi National Park back into the park after tracking them overnight using the EarthRanger system, assuring the public that the situation is fully under control.
In a statement, KWS said the lionesses were “successfully tracked using the EarthRanger system and safely guided back into the park by KWS patrol teams during the night.”
The agency emphasized that there was no longer any threat to public safety, adding that “the public may safely go on with their normal activities.”
The lionesses had earlier been sighted outside the park, prompting concern among residents in nearby areas. KWS immediately deployed patrol teams and activated its wildlife monitoring technology to track the animals and prevent potential human-wildlife conflict.
KWS praised members of the public for their cooperation, noting that timely reporting played a critical role in the successful resolution of the incident.
“We thank members of the public for their calmness, cooperation, and timely reporting, which greatly supported the safe resolution of this incident and ensured the protection of both people and wildlife,” the statement said.
The agency said the incident underscored the importance of collaboration in conservation efforts, particularly in urban areas where wildlife habitats border residential and commercial zones.
“This outcome highlights that conservation is a shared responsibility,” KWS noted.
According to the wildlife authority, continued cooperation between KWS, partners, stakeholders, and local communities remains key to protecting Kenya’s wildlife while ensuring public safety.
“Through collaboration between KWS, partners, stakeholders, and local communities, we continue to protect our wildlife and coexist safely with nature,” the statement added.
The two lionesses were sighted on January 7, 2026, near Sholinke Trading Area, Kajiado about 8.3 km from the Nairobi National park boundary, prompting Kenya Wildlife Service to issue an alert to the residents of that area.
"Two lionesses from Nairobi National Park have been sighted in the Sholinke Trading Area, approximately 8.3 km from the park boundary. KWS teams are actively managing the situation," KWS stated in a statement.
"Members of the public are urged to remain calm, avoid the area, keep children indoors, and report any sightings via Toll Free 0800 597 000 or WhatsApp 0726 610 509," the service added.
