Eight people died and seven others were injured in a tragic road accident on Tuesday night at Mukhonje trading centre in Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County.

The crash occurred along the busy Eldoret–Webuye highway and involved a passenger matatu and a truck carrying fertilizer.

Eyewitnesses said the matatu, heading from Eldoret, collided with the back of a truck that had been parked on the road. The driver of the matatu reportedly attempted to overtake other vehicles when the crash happened.

Maturu Sub-location Assistant Chief Samuel Wamalwa confirmed the accident, adding that the matatu driver was among those who died.

Emergency services responded promptly, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. The circumstances of why the truck was stationary on the highway are still under investigation.

Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution on the road, particularly at night, as traffic along the Eldoret–Webuye route remains heavy.

More details are expected as investigations continue.
