Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata will stay away from physical office engagements for about a month after sustaining a heel tendon injury while attending a meeting in Nairobi.

The county government said on Wednesday that Deputy Governor Stephen Munania and Finance CECM Prof. Kiarie will handle in-person duties, while online official meetings will continue during his recovery.

In a statement, the Murang’a County Government said the governor was today attending a Nutritional International meeting in Nairobi when he unfortunately tripped and sustained an injury to his heel tendons.”

The meeting, according to the statement, was organized by Nutrition International, a Canadian Government-supported organization that partners with Murang’a County and other counties in implementing key nutritional and public health programmes.

Following the incident, the governor underwent a medical assessment. “Following medical assessment, the Governor is currently receiving treatment and has been advised to remain away from physical office engagements for approximately one (1) month to allow for full recovery,” the statement said.

The county government outlined interim measures to ensure continuity of leadership during the governor’s recovery. “During this period, where the Governor’s physical presence is required, the Deputy Governor, H.E. Stephen Munania, will represent him,” the statement read.

It further added, “Alternatively, the County Executive Committee Member for Finance, Prof. Kiarie, will handle designated engagements as appropriate.”

Despite his temporary absence from in-person engagements, the governor is expected to continue overseeing official business remotely.

“However, official meetings via online will continue as of coming Monday,” the statement said, indicating that virtual platforms will be used to maintain administrative operations.

The county government expressed appreciation for public support during the governor’s recovery. “Murang’a County Government appreciates the continued prayers and goodwill from residents and stakeholders and we wish the Governor a speedy recovery,” the statement noted.

The announcement did not provide further details on the severity of the heel tendon injury but emphasized that the recommended recovery period is approximately one month. Heel tendon injuries can require rest and limited mobility to prevent complications and ensure proper healing.

The incident occurred during an engagement focused on nutrition and public health initiatives, reflecting ongoing partnerships between Murang’a County and international organizations.

The statement described Nutrition International as “a Canadian Government-supported organization” working with counties to implement key programmes.

By delegating in-person duties to the Deputy Governor and the Finance CECM, the county government appears intent on ensuring that operations continue smoothly. The structured arrangement signals an effort to avoid disruptions in service delivery while the governor recuperates.

The statement concluded with the county’s development pledge, “FULFILLING THE MANIFESTO,” reaffirming its commitment to maintaining progress despite the temporary leadership adjustment.

For now, Governor Kang’ata will focus on treatment and recovery while remaining engaged in official matters through virtual meetings.

County officials have assured the public that governance and service delivery will continue uninterrupted during his absence from physical office engagements.
