Kenya 7s men's national rugby team, Shujaa, began their HSBC World Championship, Hong Kong 7s on the wrong foot, suffering back-to-back defeats from Australia and New Zealand on Friday at the Kai Tak Sports Park in Kowloon.
Heading into their tournament's opener, Kenya, who had finished third in the SVNS 2 competition, met an Australia side coming in as one of the top sides in the main SVNS circuit and finished third in the standings with 82 points, Kenya unfortunately losing that tie 14-5.
Shujaa's second match of the day was against New Zealand who Kenya had not beaten in their last 13 meetings, since 2018, their last victory against them.
Kevin Wambua’s charges earlier loss was a disadvantage as New Zealand, the All Blacks Sevens, arrived confident after beating USA in their opening match, confidence that continued, winning against Kenya 28-14.
With the two defeats, Shujaa now remain bottom of the pool without a point and will return to action on Saturday against the USA at 8;21 pm local time.
