About 400 athletes from more than 11 schools and clubs across the country competed in a one-day skating event held on Saturday at the Kasarani Complex in Nairobi. The event was hosted by the Private and International Preps Schools Sports Association (PIPSSA).
Speaking in Nairobi after the event, tournament coordinator Bilha Nju’nge said the competition, sanctioned by the skating federation, reflects the rapidly growing structure and competitiveness of the sport at the junior level.
She noted that participation has grown significantly, rising from 300 school-going children last year to 400 this year, an indication that skating is becoming increasingly popular in schools.
“This year’s number has increased by a hundred. I didn’t see that coming, but all in all we appreciate it and have taken it positively,” said Bilha.
“Through this event, our aim is to develop skating athletes countywide. Having 11 schools from across Kenya coming here is no mean feat. We thank the schools for taking their time to invest in skating,” she added.
In the girls’ 100m race, Tracy Ruguru, 11, of Toto Skaters delivered a composed performance to secure gold in 15.79 seconds. She held her line strongly to finish ahead of teammate Ayana Mathei, sealing a one-two result for the club, while Mashru Sneha of SCLP Samaj completed the podium.
The boys’ 100m final saw Francis Otieno, 10, of Juja St Peters take top honours after clocking 13.70 seconds. His quick start and steady pace proved decisive as he finished ahead of Muriuki Fadhili of SCLP Samaj and Brennan Adriel of Toto Skaters, who placed second and third respectively.
Teams such as Arya Vedic Academy, Brookhurst International School, Toto Skaters, Pioneer Junior and Juja St Peters were among those in attendance, each presenting well-prepared athletes across different categories.
PIPSSA Kenya official and tournament coordinator Bilha Nju’nge added that more events are planned in the coming months, with other disciplines such as swimming also set to feature as part of a broader development programme.
According to her, focus now shifts to the East Africa Swimming Development Championship in Dar es Salaam next month, where regional competition is expected to further test emerging swimming talent.
