The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has demanded justice over the gang rape of a woman during a circumcision procession in Laare, Meru County.
In a statement on Saturday, December 6, 2025, KEWOPA termed the incident a grave violation of the victim’s dignity, security, and fundamental rights.
“It is especially painful that such an attack has occurred during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, a period dedicated to raising awareness, protecting survivors and demanding accountability,” said KEWOPA chair Leah Sankaire.
Sankaire welcomed the arrest of six suspects and called for swift, transparent, and decisive justice, including the immediate apprehension of all remaining perpetrators.
Officers from Laare Police Station launched an operation across Irinde, Lubwa, and Kiarama, leading to the arrest of the six suspects linked to the assault.
“Justice must not be delayed. Every person involved in planning, participating in, or enabling this assault must face the full force of the law,” she said.
She also urged that the survivor receive comprehensive and uninterrupted medical and psychosocial support, stressing that her privacy, safety, and well-being must be safeguarded throughout the process.
Sankaire said the incident is a stark reminder that violence against women and girls remains a national crisis requiring urgent action. She emphasized that cultural activities and community practices must never create space for harm.
She expressed solidarity with the victim, saying KEWOPA will continue monitoring the case.
“We stand with the survivor. We stand with the women and girls of Meru. And we stand with all Kenyans who demand a country where no woman or girl ever faces this kind of violence,” she said.
The victim was assaulted on December 1, 2025, in Igembe North Sub-County during a traditional circumcision procession, an incident that has sparked national outrage and renewed calls for accountability.
Police say they responded to a distress call from residents who found the woman in critical condition. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she continues to receive medical care and psychosocial support.
