Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, has been charged with murdering his parents, prosecutors in Los Angeles announced.

The District Attorney, Nathan Hochman, confirmed that Reiner faces two counts of first-degree murder, along with a special circumstance for multiple murders. If convicted, he could face life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

The charges were filed just two days after Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead in their Brentwood home with multiple stab wounds. The indictment also includes a specific allegation that a knife was used in the attack.

During a Tuesday news conference,  Hochman said, "No decision has been made about whether prosecutors will seek the death penalty." He added that Reiner would be brought to court to formally face the charges and enter a plea once prison officials confirm he is medically cleared.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell described the case as "heartbreaking and deeply personal, not only for the Reiner family and their loved ones, but for the entire city." He extended condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy.

While officials said the murder weapon would be disclosed in court, autopsy reports are still pending to determine the precise cause, manner, and time of death.

Rob Reiner is renowned for directing films across several genres, including This is Spinal Tap, Misery, and A Few Good Men. Michele Singer Reiner was an actress, photographer, and producer, and she founded Reiner Light, a photography and production company.
