The Supreme Court has formally outlined how it will operate during the upcoming Easter period, announcing specific dates when the court will be on recess while maintaining access for urgent cases and public services.
According to a gazette notice issued by Chief Justice Martha Koome, the Easter recess will take effect on Thursday, March 26, 2026, and will run until Wednesday, April 8, 2026, with both dates included.
The notice was issued under Article 163 (1) (a) of the Constitution, together with Sections 6A and 29D of the Supreme Court Act, 2011, and Rules 4, 5 and 7 of the Supreme Court Rules, 2020.
While the court will not be sitting fully during this period, the Chief Justice clarified that judicial services will not come to a halt. A duty Judge will be on standby throughout the recess to handle matters that are urgent and cannot wait until the court resumes normal sittings.
The notice also addresses access to administrative services. The Supreme Court Registry will remain open to the public on all weekdays during the recess, except on public holidays. Operating hours will be from 8.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., allowing court users to continue accessing registry services.
The announcement was dated January 27, 2026, and signed by the Chief Justice in her role as President of the Supreme Court of Kenya, confirming the court’s commitment to continuity even during the Easter break.
