Kenya’s top golfer, Njoroge Kibugu, has been rewarded by the Kenyan government with Sh5 million in recognition of his phenomenal performance at the recently concluded Magical Kenya Open (MKO) in February.
Speaking on Tuesday while presenting the cheque at Talanta Plaza in Nairobi, the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, said the monetary award fulfills a pledge made to the young golfer by President William Ruto during the award presentation and closing ceremony of the MKO at Karen Country Golf Club on February, 22, 2026.
"The presentation of this cheque is a testament to the government’s resolve to nurture and inspire talent in diverse sports disciplines," said CS Mvurya, adding that the ministry will collaborate with federations and sports stakeholders to uplift talent and make it a source of livelihood.
While receiving the cheque, Kibugu said the award was an inspiration to other golfers and proof that investing time, skill, and resources in training is rewarding. He further noted that the government’s support for the growth and development of golfing in Kenya is a significant step toward creating a new generation of golfing champions.
“This is a great move, not just for me but for other golfers, including juniors aspiring to play professionally. They can now see that if you put in time and effort, success can be achieved,” he said.
On 20th February 2026, the 22-year-old golfer delivered a truly remarkable performance at the Magical Kenya Open, becoming the only Kenyan player to make the cut after a dramatic eagle on the 18th hole—when he only needed a birdie.
