In its latest advisory, the weatherman noted that the rain is likely to be accompanied by isolated storms, especially during the afternoon, evening, and early morning hours. The public has been urged to remain cautious and take safety measures to avoid accidents and property damage.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned residents in Nairobi and its surrounding areas to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flooding between 9 a.m. Tuesday, October 28, and 9 a.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

The department said some areas may receive over 20mm of rain, with others experiencing very heavy downpours exceeding 50mm within 24 hours.

In its latest advisory, the weatherman noted that the rain is likely to be accompanied by isolated storms, especially during the afternoon, evening, and early morning hours. The public has been urged to remain cautious and take safety measures to avoid accidents and property damage.

“Be advised: Some parts of the Nairobi Metropolis may experience HEAVY (>20mm) to VERY HEAVY (>50mm) rainfall within 24 hours. Isolated storms may also occur especially during the afternoon, evening, and early morning hours,” the statement read.

The department also warned of potential flooding in low-lying areas, saying the rain could cause traffic disruptions and waterlogging in parts of the city.

“Expect moderate to heavy rainfall across several areas with potential localized flooding and traffic disruptions,” the alert stated.

City residents, motorists, and commuters have been advised to remain alert, avoid flooded roads, and plan their movements in advance to prevent delays and accidents.

The department further urged the public to ensure drainage systems around homes and businesses are clear to minimize flooding risks.

“People should be careful while driving, avoid walking or driving through flooded roads, and make sure drainage systems are not blocked,” the department advised.

Major routes, including Thika Road, Mombasa Road, Waiyaki Way, and Jogoo Road, are expected to experience heavy traffic and reduced visibility during the rains.

The advisory comes as weather conditions across the country continue to fluctuate, with several regions already recording high rainfall as the short rains season strengthens.

The weatherman assured that monitoring of weather patterns will continue and that updates will be shared promptly to ensure public awareness and preparedness. Residents are encouraged to follow official communication channels for real-time weather updates and emergency information.

Floods have previously led to loss of lives, destruction of property, and disruption of economic activities, particularly in urban and low-lying areas. The department noted that lessons from past events, including the 2024 floods, show that poor drainage and rapid urban development in flood-prone zones continue to worsen the impact of heavy rainfall.
