Three companies, including two from China and one Kenyan firm, have been awarded a Sh3.9 billion contract to upgrade roads, footpaths, and bridges around Talanta Sports City Stadium.
The project is part of preparations for the African Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania in 2027.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) selected China Road and Bridge Corporation, China WU Yi Co Ltd, and Gaps Construction and Engineering Co. Limited through the Specially Permitted Procurement Procedure (SPPP). The firms will carry out works to enhance access and safety for pedestrians and vehicles around the sports complex and surrounding roads.
Planned developments include footpaths on both sides of Ngong Road, a dual carriageway with pedestrian walkways linking Ngong Road to Cemetery Road, and a bridge at the Southern Bypass interchange. Another bridge will also be built across Ngong Road to facilitate smoother traffic flow.
“Your firm has been identified as one of the qualified, vetted, and approved contractors capable of undertaking this strategic infrastructure project,” KURA stated in a letter to China Road and Bridge Corporation. The letters to all three firms were issued on January 9, 2026, confirming a construction timeline of 12 months, with a defects notification period of one year.
The project will also cover a single carriageway and footpaths from the VIP entrance of Talanta Sports Complex to the Kenya Scouts Association, as well as a similar setup along Cemetery Road.
The SPPP allows KURA to engage contractors directly without opening a public tender, a method typically used for urgent, high-value projects with tight deadlines.
The road upgrades along Ngong Road and the Southern Bypass are expected to ease movement and reduce congestion when fans travel to events at the stadium.
Awarding the contract to Chinese firms continues the trend of their dominance in Kenya’s large infrastructure projects, which include the Nairobi Expressway, the standard gauge railway, the Southern and Eastern bypasses, the Thika Superhighway, and the Rironi–Mau Summit road.
China Road and Bridge Corporation has previously delivered major transport projects in the country, including the Nairobi Expressway and the Mombasa–Nairobi–Naivasha standard gauge railway. The Talanta Sports infrastructure project marks another key milestone in preparing Kenya for high-profile international sporting events.
