The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has seized counterfeit alcohol valued at Sh1.2 million in a major operation targeting the illicit liquor trade in Keumbu, Kisii County.
According to NACADA, the raid followed days of intelligence gathering that uncovered a network distributing fake alcoholic drinks in the region.
Officers from NACADA, the National Police Service, and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) jointly conducted the operation.
The team confiscated a large consignment of counterfeit alcohol bearing popular brand names but posing serious health risks to consumers.
The seized drinks were estimated to have a street value of Sh1.2 million.
NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa said the Keumbu operation was a clear demonstration of the Authority’s intensified fight against illicit alcohol and drugs under the RRI framework.
“This operation in Kisii is not an isolated event. It is part of a broader, sustained Rapid Results Initiative against the scourge of drugs and illicit alcohol,” Dr. Omerikwa said.
“Our message to those peddling these poisonous substances is clear — we are coming for you.”
He said the high value of the seized products highlights the scale of the illegal trade and its impact on communities.
“The Sh1.2 million worth of counterfeit liquor we have taken off the streets today represents not just lost revenue but also a threat to public health and safety,” he added.
The multi-agency operation, carried out on Wednesday, is part of the government’s Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) against drugs and substance abuse launched by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
Dr. Omerikwa also warned that the country is facing an increase in drug and alcohol abuse, saying NACADA will not relent in its efforts.
“As we notice an alarming rise in substance abuse nationwide, our resolve only grows stronger. We will continue dismantling every criminal network involved,” he said.
The case has been handed over to relevant agencies for investigation and prosecution.
NACADA urged members of the public to remain alert and report any illegal brewing or distribution activities to help curb the spread of counterfeit alcohol across the country.
