The Kenya Professional Boxing Commission has confirmed the death of Kisumu-based professional boxer Jacob Oyoko following an incident during a bout, saying a probe is underway.

In a statement issued on Sunday, March 29, the commission said Oyoko passed away after the incident occurred on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at the Mumias Cultural Centre. Despite emergency medical protocols being promptly activated, efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

An online video shows Oyoko trying to keep up during the fight against his opponent, Julius Okuruchi.

The commission expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

“The Kenya Professional Boxing Commission (KPBC) is profoundly saddened and heartbroken by the untimely death of professional boxer Jacob Oyoko from Kisumu, who passed away,” KPBC said.

The KPBC said it immediately activated its Fighter Fatality Protocol, with the boxer receiving ringside medical attention, including CPR, oxygen support, and transfer to hospital.

A full medical report is expected from the attending physician, while relevant authorities, including the police and the Ministry of Sports, have been notified.

An independent investigation has since been launched, with a review committee comprising external medical experts, legal professionals, and senior boxing officials set to examine all aspects of the bout.

“All relevant authorities have been notified, including the Kenya Police, the Ministry of Sports, Sports Kenya, and the County Health Department,” KPBC said in a statement.

A post-mortem examination has also been requested in line with Kenyan law.

The commission further pledged support to Oyoko’s family, including assistance with funeral and medical expenses, and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening safety standards in boxing.

It added that necessary changes would be implemented based on the findings of the investigation to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

The incident has raised convcen over whether the fight was too heavy on the deceased and should have been stopped by the referee.
