The project, unveiled at a ceremony in Mogadishu, will use advanced technologies including Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Deep Learning to detect and analyse misinformation circulating on social media platforms.

Somalia has launched a new artificial intelligence research initiative in the country’s digital and scientific development aimed at combating the spread of fake news in the Somali language.

The project, unveiled at a ceremony in Mogadishu, will use advanced technologies including Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Deep Learning to detect and analyse misinformation circulating on social media platforms.

The initiative is a collaboration between Somali academic institutions and international partners, including research bodies from China and Djibouti.

Jamhuriya University of Science and Technology, in partnership with the University of Djibouti, promises to revolutionise the integration of Somali language into artificial intelligence and boost digital inclusion in the region.

It focuses on developing tools capable of understanding and processing Somali-language content, an area that has long been underrepresented in global AI systems.

In a press statement issued during the launch, organisers said the project seeks to “address the growing threat of misinformation by building intelligent systems that can analyse Somali text, detect false narratives, and support efforts to promote credible information across digital platforms.”

The statement added that the research will also contribute to the development of Somali-language datasets and technological resources while bridging the critical gap in artificial intelligence innovation.

Alongside the project, officials inaugurated the Somali-language AI and Innovation Lab (SAIL), a new centre dedicated to advancing research and technological development in the Somali language.

“The establishment of the Somali-language AI & Innovation Lab represents a major milestone in strengthening local capacity in artificial intelligence and fostering innovation that reflects our linguistic and cultural context,” the statement read.

According to organisers, the lab will focus on promoting Somali-language scientific research, enhancing collaboration between institutions, and supporting the development of solutions that benefit communities.

The event was attended by senior government officials, academics, and international representatives, including the Ambassador of Djibouti to Somalia, Mohamed Ibrahim Youssouf, who underscored the importance of regional cooperation in science and technology.

Participants described the initiative as a timely intervention, as misinformation continues to pose challenges to public discourse and access to reliable information in Somalia.

The university said the project and the new AI lab are expected to play a key role in improving digital literacy, strengthening research capacity, and positioning Somalia within the global technological landscape.

“The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to harnessing innovation for sustainable development and empowering Somali researchers to contribute to global knowledge,” the press statement read in parts.
