Mombasa County on Monday issued a 45-day relocation notice to traders at Makupa/Majengo market to allow construction of a modern facility under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Traders are to move to a temporary open-air site along Majengo Road as the county promises improved facilities within 12 months.
In a public notice issued by the County Government of Mombasa, Department of Trade, Culture and Tourism, officials said the relocation is intended to facilitate the redevelopment of the trading space.
“The County Government of Mombasa wishes to notify all traders operating in Makupa/Majengo market to remove and clear their wares from the market within Forty Five [45] days from the date of this notice,” the statement reads.
The county administration said the move is designed to create a more structured and improved business environment.
According to the notice, the redevelopment aims at “the construction of a new modern market intended to accommodate more traders, improve work environment, provide better storage facilities, foster safety and security of traders and their wares.”
The project has been described as part of a broader economic plan aligned with national priorities.
County officials stated that the market upgrade forms part of the ongoing flagship initiative under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which reflects the National and County Government's commitment in creating jobs and promoting business especially for the people of Mvita.
As part of the transition plan, traders have been directed to move to a temporary site as construction gets under way.
The notice urges traders to cooperate with county officials during the relocation process.
“You are kindly urged to safely pack and remove all your belongings from your current stall and move to a temporary open air market located near the market along Majengo road as may be directed by the County Director Trade,” the statement says.
County authorities have indicated that the new facility will be completed within a year. “The Modern market construction project is expected to take less than 12 months, after which priority for the new, modern stalls will be given to current traders in and outside the market,” the notice adds.
The administration has warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe may attract enforcement measures under county legislation.
“All affected traders are urged to comply within the stipulated timeframe to avoid enforcement action in accordance with the County laws,” the statement cautions.
The county government expressed appreciation to traders for their anticipated cooperation during the transition period.
“We appreciate your cooperation in improving our trading environment,” the notice concludes.
The public notice was signed by Peter M. Migosi, Acting Director of Trade in the Department of Tourism, Culture and Trade.
The Makupa/Majengo market serves hundreds of small-scale traders and plays a key role in the local economy of Mvita.
The planned redevelopment is expected to reshape the trading landscape in the area, with county officials positioning the project as both an economic stimulus and an infrastructure upgrade.
For traders, the next six weeks will be a period of transition as they prepare to shift operations to the designated temporary open-air market.
County authorities maintain that the long-term benefits of the redevelopment will outweigh the short-term disruption, promising improved facilities and expanded trading opportunities once the project is complete.
