Citizenship is to be marked as (C) for citizens and (N) for non-citizens. Parents are also required to confirm the subjects registered for each learner.

Parents and schools across the country are now racing against time to confirm learner registration details for national examinations, after the Kenya National Examinations Council moved the verification deadline to April 30, 2026, in a move aimed at correcting recurring errors that have affected candidates in past exam cycles.

In a public notice, the Kenya National Examinations Council directed parents and guardians to confirm their children’s registration details by sending the KPSEA or KJSEA assessment number, or the KCSE index number, through SMS to 20076. The exercise is meant to ensure that all candidate records are accurate before final preparations for the exams begin.

The information to be verified includes correct spelling and order of names, gender, date of birth, school of registration, and citizenship status. Citizenship is to be marked as (C) for citizens and (N) for non-citizens. Parents are also required to confirm the subjects registered for each learner.

For KPSEA and KJSEA candidates, this includes Kiswahili or Kiswahili Sign Language, as well as Religious Education options such as CRE, IRE or HRE. KCSE candidates are required to confirm their optional subjects as captured during registration.

“The deadline for confirmation is April 30, 2026. In case of any queries, please contact your head of institution,” KNEC said.

The registration exercise for Grade 6 learners under the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment ran from February 16 to March 16, 2026. For Grade 9 learners under the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment, registration was conducted from March 2 to March 31, 2026, while KCSE registration also ran from February 16 to March 31, 2026. Schools were required to upload all candidate data within the set timelines.

During the launch of the registration exercise on February 13, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba instructed education officials and KNEC staff to ensure the process is carried out with accuracy to avoid errors that could affect learners.

He expressed concern over past cases where schools submitted incorrect details, including wrong gender entries and failure to register some candidates, saying such mistakes disadvantage learners and expose the government to legal risks.

“For the 2026 cycle, we will identify heads of institutions that will have registration-related errors for appropriate disciplinary action by the Teachers Service Commission,” he warned.

He also directed schools to upload contact details of parents and guardians to improve communication and ensure proper capture of assessment scores.

KNEC Chief Executive David Njegere said candidate numbers are expected to rise to about 3.7 million in 2026, compared to 3,429,683 in 2025, based on previous trends.

He stressed that accurate registration data is critical because it is used in planning examinations and determining placement for learners. He warned that even small mistakes can have serious consequences.

He pointed out that incorrect gender details for KJSEA candidates, for example, could result in placement in senior schools that do not match the learner’s profile during transition to Grade 10.

“We are hereby calling upon the associations to support the process by ensuring that all heads of institutions and parents or guardians presenting candidates for KPSEA, KJSEA and KCSE examinations are sensitised on the need for accurate and timely registration of all candidates,” he said.
