The program is designed to build the capacity of educators in developing quality test items that support effective assessment of learner competencies across primary, secondary, special needs, and teacher training college levels.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is calling on qualified teachers and teacher educators to apply for training in item writing for Competency-Based Assessment (CBA), set to take place in April 2026.

The program is designed to build the capacity of educators in developing quality test items that support effective assessment of learner competencies across primary, secondary, special needs, and teacher training college levels.

According to KNEC, “Trained teachers and teacher educators will be certified and could be engaged by KNEC as contracted professionals from time to time as may be necessary.”

The council emphasizes that applicants must demonstrate “unquestionable and irreproachable integrity” and be professional or subject specialists in the areas they intend to train.

Eligible candidates must currently be teaching the relevant subjects in primary (Grades 1 to 6), junior (Grades 7 to 9), or senior schools (Grade 10), as well as in teacher training colleges under the DTE-PP&P, DSTE, or DSNE programs.

Candidates must also possess the required academic and professional qualifications, be conversant with the content of the curriculum, have a minimum of three years’ teaching experience, be registered with the Teachers Service Commission, and be recommended by their head of institution.

KNEC has provided a wide range of subjects for training. For primary schools, these include Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Science and Technology, Social Studies, Art & Craft, Music, Physical and Health Education, Christian and Islamic Religious Education, and Kenyan Sign Language, among others.

For junior and senior schools, the program covers subjects such as Business Studies, Computer Science, Visual and Performing Arts, Core and Essential Mathematics, Sciences, and a variety of technical and vocational courses.

Teacher training colleges also have comprehensive areas of focus, including Educational Assessment, Curriculum Studies, Research Skills, Inclusive Education, ICT Integration in Education, Physical and Health Education, and specialized subjects like Aviation, Media Technology, and Mechatronics.

Interested applicants are required to submit their applications online by April 13, 2026, through KNEC’s portal at https://markingapp.knec.ac.ke.

KNEC advises applicants to carefully read the instructions, provide all necessary information, and upload their documents as one continuous PDF.

Only successful applicants will be contacted by phone or email at the addresses provided. KNEC also notes that teachers who have previously undergone its item writing training are not eligible to apply.

Through this initiative, KNEC aims to ensure that assessment standards remain robust and effective, equipping teachers and educators with the skills needed to develop quality test items that align with Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum.
