The AU warned that such acts of violence risk disrupting ongoing efforts to build inclusive political institutions and restore stability after years of conflict.

Libya’s political landscape faces renewed tension following reports of the killing of Saïf al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi, prompting concern from the African Union over the country’s fragile transition.

The African Union Commission issued a statement on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, responding to reports that the incident occurred on February 3 in Zintan City. The AU warned that such acts of violence risk disrupting ongoing efforts to build inclusive political institutions and restore stability after years of conflict.

The continental body said the timing of the killing could worsen existing divisions and undermine the country’s path toward reconciliation and peaceful governance.

“Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has learned with deep concern of reports regarding the killing of the Libyan political figure, Saïf al-Islam Gaddafi, on 3 February 2026 in Zintan City,” the statement reads.

The Commission emphasized that violent incidents like this threaten the progress of political dialogue and weaken trust among the various Libyan factions.

“The Chairperson strongly condemns this violent act, which risks further undermining efforts toward a credible and inclusive political transition in Libya,” the statement adds.

Acknowledging the human impact, the AU extended condolences to the family and those affected, calling on all parties to resolve differences lawfully.

“The Chairperson expresses his condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as to all those affected by this incident, and recalls the imperative of resolving political differences through peaceful and lawful means,” the statement reads.

The African Union also urged Libya’s authorities to ensure a transparent investigation and hold those responsible accountable.

“Mahmoud Ali Youssouf calls upon the Libyan authorities to uphold the rule of law and to ensure that the circumstances surrounding this killing are thoroughly investigated, and that those responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law,” the statement reads.

Finally, the AU appealed for restraint among political actors while reaffirming its ongoing support for Libya’s stability and peacebuilding.

“The Chairperson further urges restraint and calm among all Libyan political actors and reiterates the African Union’s continued commitment to supporting the Libyan people and institutions in their efforts to achieve a durable, consensual, and peaceful resolution to the political and security crisis that has affected the country since 2011,” the statement reads.
