Nairobi motorists are bracing for temporary traffic disruptions as the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) begins partial closure and reinstatement works at Globe Roundabout along Thika Superhighway (A2).
The works, which will run until Thursday, March 19, 2026, target the Nairobi River bridge, a key junction in one of Kenya’s busiest urban corridors.
KeNHA’s announcement on Thursday comes as the authority moves to restore and strengthen the bridge, a critical section connecting Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) to major roads including University Way, Limuru Road, and several feeder routes.
Traffic heading towards the CBD is expected to face delays, prompting the authority to issue detailed diversion plans. Vehicles coming from Thika will be directed to the Globe Overpass, while those on University Way from Thika will use Prof Wangari Maathai Road.
Drivers bound for Kirinyaga Road and OTC should take Ring Road, and traffic from Kipande Road heading to the CBD is advised to use Limuru Road, also called Fig Tree Road, before joining Prof Wangari Maathai Road. Additionally, motorists from University Way and the CBD who wish to make a U-turn at Globe Roundabout will be rerouted to the Guru Nanak U-turn.
KeNHA noted that temporary traffic management measures, including lane controls and additional diversions, may be introduced gradually as technical inspections and stabilization work continue.
The authority urged drivers to stay alert, follow directions from traffic marshals, and cooperate with police to prevent accidents and congestion.
The partial closure underscores the importance of infrastructure maintenance in Nairobi, where rapid urban growth and increasing vehicle numbers strain the road network.
Thika Superhighway serves as a vital link between Nairobi and industrial and residential zones in Kiambu County and beyond. Investment in road upkeep and expansion aims to improve safety, reduce delays, and prevent structural deterioration, including damage from seasonal flooding.
Eng. Luka Kimeli, KeNHA’s Director-General, emphasized public engagement, urging motorists to use official communication channels for inquiries. “The public can reach us through the toll-free line 0800-211-244, customer care number 0700 423 606, or email [email protected]. Updates on progress and timelines are also available on our website,” he said.
Authorities stress that cooperation from road users is key to completing the works on schedule and enhancing traffic flow. As Nairobi’s urban population grows, balancing road upgrades with smooth mobility remains a priority, reflecting broader efforts to provide safer highways and better connections across the city.
