The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has ordered all traders and owners of unauthorised structures along the Mtito Andei stretch of Mombasa Road to vacate the road reserve within 21 days. The directive, issued in a notice dated March 17, 2026, comes ahead of planned infrastructure upgrades along the busy highway.
According to KeNHA, all roadside occupants must remove their goods and structures to allow for service road improvements and drainage rehabilitation.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) hereby notifies all illegal roadside occupants, including traders and unauthorised structures, along the Mitto Andei section of the A8 Road (Mombasa Road) in both directions, to remove their wares and vacate the road reserve within 21 days from the date of this notice,” the notice reads.
The authority explained that the planned works are part of broader road safety initiatives aimed at reducing traffic accidents and ensuring smooth and safe vehicle movement along Mombasa Road.
“All affected traders and occupants are therefore required, through this notice, to remove their goods, structures, and any other encroachments from the road reserve within twenty-one (21) days from the date of this notice,” KeNHA added.
The notice warns that after the deadline of Wednesday, April 8, 2026, any remaining structures or goods will be cleared without further notice to the owners.
“Upon the expiry of the 21 days — Wednesday, 8 April 2026 — any structures, goods, or encroachments remaining within the said section of the road reserve shall be removed without further reference to the owners,” the notice states.
KeNHA, which is responsible for the management, development, rehabilitation, and maintenance of national highways in Kenya, has previously issued similar orders. On February 24, the authority directed traders along parts of the Thika Superhighway to vacate within seven days to facilitate infrastructure upgrades.
