Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes to ease traffic flow as thousands of rally fans are expected to travel to host towns during the global motorsport event.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a traffic advisory ahead of the Safari Rally from March 12–15, warning of expected congestion on major routes from Nairobi.

Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes to ease traffic flow as thousands of rally fans are expected to travel to host towns during the global motorsport event.

In a public notice issued on Wednesday, the authority said the advisory is intended to help manage the anticipated surge in traffic as spectators head to rally stages and surrounding towns.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) hereby issues a traffic advisory and alternative routes to ease anticipated traffic congestion caused by the public heading to the Safari Rally event from 12th to 15th March, 2026,” the statement read.

KeNHA outlined several alternative routes that motorists can use to reduce congestion along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru corridor and other connecting highways.

Among the recommended options is the Scenic Route, which runs from Nairobi through Rironi, Flyover (Magumu), Njambini, Ol Kalou, Dundori and finally Lanet.

Another option is the Adventure Route, which takes motorists from Nairobi to Rironi, then Naivasha, Engineer, Ol Kalou, Dundori and Lanet.

Motorists travelling via central Kenya can also use the Thika Trail, which runs from Nairobi through Thika, Magumu, Ol Kalou and Dundori before connecting to Lanet.

Meanwhile, those heading toward Nakuru through the southern corridor can take the Suswa shortcut, which passes through Ngong, Suswa and Narok before joining the Nakuru route.

The authority said the routes are designed to distribute traffic more evenly and minimize congestion along key rally access roads.

In addition to advising motorists, KeNHA issued a stern warning to truck drivers operating along highways during the rally period.

The authority cautioned against parking trucks in undesignated areas along the highway.

“The Authority advises all truck drivers not to park at any undesignated locations on the highway, as violation of this directive shall lead to immediate arrest,” the notice warned.

KeNHA said enforcement measures will be implemented to ensure smooth traffic flow and enhance safety for motorists, rally spectators, and residents travelling along the affected routes.

The authority reiterated its commitment to road safety during the rally period. “The Authority continues to ensure your safety on all our highways,” said KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli.

The Safari Rally, one of the most iconic events on the global rally calendar, is expected to attract large crowds and significantly increase road traffic across several routes linking Nairobi, Naivasha, Narok and Nakuru.
