Court records show that the accused, armed with pangas, metal rods, and timber frames, confronted the victim, Janice Gacheri, before carrying out the robbery.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has secured a death sentence for Douglas Muriithi and Antony Mugendi after they were found guilty of violently robbing a woman in Meru County.

The court ruled that the two men attacked the victim with dangerous weapons before stealing goods valued at Sh19,600.

The incident occurred on the night of September 6, 2024, at around 11:40 p.m. in Maua Location, Igembe South Sub-County.

Court records show that the accused, armed with pangas, metal rods, and timber frames, confronted the victim, Janice Gacheri, before carrying out the robbery.

During the attack, Muriithi and Mugendi stole Sh5,700 in cash, 87 kilograms of sugar worth Sh13,050, and 17 kilograms of onions valued at Sh850.

The court noted that the victim suffered injuries during the assault, a factor that intensified the seriousness of the crime.

“The two attackers, armed with dangerous weapons including pangas, metal rods, and timber frames, accosted the victim… and robbed her of the items,” the prosecution stated during the trial.

Led by Kelvin Gitonga, the prosecution successfully proved that the accused committed the offence, meeting the legal requirements for conviction. “The prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt,” the court observed before delivering the sentence.

In line with the law governing robbery with violence, both Muriithi and Mugendi were sentenced to death.

The ruling reflects the judiciary’s firm approach toward violent crimes and demonstrates the DPP’s commitment to protecting victims and ensuring justice is served.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences of committing violent robbery and using weapons during criminal acts. It also highlights the courts’ determination to uphold public safety and deter similar offences.
