Gachagua returns to Ol Kalou for constituency-wide thank-you tour

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) will on Friday take its post-election celebrations back to Ol Kalou Constituency, with party leader Rigathi Gachagua leading senior officials on a thank-you tour after the party's commanding victory in the parliamentary by-election.

The visit comes a day after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Sammy Douglas Waweru the winner of the hotly contested race, handing DCP its first parliamentary seat since the party was formed.

According to a programme released by Gachagua on Thursday night, the leaders will make stops in all the five wards of the constituency to appreciate residents for their support during the campaigns and on voting day.

Gachagua will be joined by Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia and Ol Kalou MP-elect Sammy Douglas Waweru.

The team will kick off the tour at Ndundori Gwa Kiongo at 11am before heading to Ngorika at noon. They will then proceed to Tumaini at 1pm, Ol Kalou town at 2pm and conclude the day's activities in Miharati town at 3pm.

The appreciation tour follows Waweru's decisive victory in one of the country's closely followed parliamentary by-elections.

Official results released by the electoral commission showed Waweru garnered more than 35,440 votes, comfortably beating United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who polled about 5,450 votes.

The outcome delivered DCP its maiden seat in the National Assembly and capped months of campaigning led by Gachagua, who repeatedly pitched the contest as a key political test for the party.

After the results were announced, Gachagua congratulated Waweru and expressed gratitude to the people of Ol Kalou for rallying behind DCP.

He said the outcome reflected the wishes of the electorate and praised residents for remaining vigilant and protecting their votes throughout the election.

"I thank the great people of Ol Kalou for giving our party, DCP, its first Member of the National Assembly," Gachagua said.

He also praised Senator John Methu and Nyandarua Woman Representative Wanjiku Muhia for the role they played in leading the campaign.

Gachagua said the victory had given the party fresh confidence ahead of the 2027 General Election, adding that Waweru joins a team committed to advancing the interests of Kenyans.

The by-election drew strong interest from both DCP and the ruling United Democratic Alliance, with each side deploying top leaders to rally support for their candidates.

While government leaders asked voters to back ongoing development projects in the constituency, the opposition centred its campaigns on the rising cost of living, economic hardships and the need for political change.

Voting was largely peaceful, although isolated cases of violence were reported in parts of Ol Kalou town, including attacks on journalists. The incidents attracted condemnation from media organisations, the Media Council of Kenya and the Kenya Union of Journalists.

The victory is expected to strengthen Gachagua's influence in the Mt Kenya region and give DCP fresh momentum as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
