K'Ogalo hand Owino captaincy, retired Otieno named team manager

Following the retirement of long-serving skipper Philemon "Mbish" Otieno, 22-time Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia have appointed defender Sylvester Owino as the club's new captain.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the 2025/2026 league champions, who are currently in Rwanda for the CECAFA Club Championship, said Owino had been handed the captain's armband following a joint decision by the technical bench and the club's management.

"He has impressed with his consistency, professionalism and commanding presence at the heart of the defence since his arrival," the statement read.

"The decision to appoint Owino was jointly made by the club's technical bench and management, who cited his outstanding performances and unwavering dedication since arriving at the club," it added.

Owino, who joined Gor Mahia from Kakamega Homeboyz in 2022, will be assisted by former AFC Leopards academy product Michael Kibwage, who signed from Tusker FC in August 2025 after impressing with Harambee Stars during the CHAN tournament. Kibwage has also previously featured for Sofapaka and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).

Academy graduate Alpha Onyango, who captained the side for much of last season as Otieno featured sparingly, will continue as an assistant captain.

If all three are unavailable, experienced midfielder Lawrence Juma will take over the captaincy, assisted by Ghanaian forward Ebenezer Assifuah, who joined the club from Malaysia's Kedah Darul Aman midway through last season and recently extended his stay by two years.

Otieno retires after a distinguished 10-year playing career at Gor Mahia, during which he developed into one of the country's most dependable defenders. He rose through the ranks at the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA), later playing for Mahakama FC and Ushuru FC before joining Gor Mahia.

Initially a midfielder, Otieno successfully transitioned into a right-back and earned a call-up to the Harambee Stars squad that featured at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt under coach Sébastien Migné.

Following his retirement, Otieno has been appointed Gor Mahia's Team Manager. The club says the new leadership structure will bring stability and renewed energy as K'Ogalo seek continued domestic success and aim to reclaim continental glory, last achieved in 1987.
