Kenya Airports Authority officially transitions to public limited company

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has officially transitioned into a public limited company, marking a major change in the way the State-owned airport operator will be governed and managed.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 27, 2026, KAA said it had been incorporated as Kenya Airports Authority PLC on June 3, 2026, under the Companies Act, 2015.

The new company was registered under Certificate No. PLC-P6U58MWD as part of the Government's ongoing reforms targeting State-owned enterprises.

The transition follows the repeal of the Kenya Airports Authority Act (Cap. 395) on December 5, 2025, under the Government Owned Enterprises Act, 2025.

KAA said the new corporate structure is expected to strengthen governance and accountability while improving the organisation's commercial sustainability and operational performance.

The changes are also intended to give the airport operator a stronger legal and institutional framework to improve efficiency, encourage innovation and compete more effectively in the aviation sector.

"This transformation aligns with the Government of Kenya's State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) reforms aimed at enhancing governance, accountability, commercial sustainability and operational performance," the authority said.

The transition comes as the Government continues to reorganise State corporations, with a focus on improving how they operate and reducing inefficiencies.

KAA said the new status would not alter its commitment to its core responsibilities of managing airport operations and supporting the country's aviation industry.

"As Kenya Airports Authority PLC, we remain dedicated to delivering safe, secure, efficient, and sustainable airport operations," Managing Director and CEO Moses Wekesa said.

He added that the company would seek to deepen its partnerships while supporting further growth in Kenya's aviation sector.

"We look forward to strengthening our key partnerships and driving further growth within Kenya's aviation sector," Wekesa said.

The authority operates Kenya's airports and plays a key role in facilitating passenger and cargo movement while supporting the wider aviation and tourism industries.

The incorporation of Kenya Airports Authority PLC now places the organisation under the corporate framework provided by the Companies Act, following the repeal of the legislation that previously governed its operations.

The authority said the transition represents a major milestone in its corporate development as it adapts to the Government's new approach to State-owned enterprises.
