Government, county to support victims of deadly webuye road crash

Speaking after visiting victims of the accident, National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetang'ula said the government had moved quickly to support affected families and those undergoing treatment in hospitals.

Families of victims killed in a devastating road crash at Malaha Junction in Webuye Sub-County, Bungoma County, will receive support from both the national and county governments following the tragedy that claimed at least 15 lives.

The accident, which involved a truck reportedly driven recklessly, has left more than 21 people injured and sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety measures in Kenya.

Speaking after visiting victims of the accident, National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetang'ula said the government had moved quickly to support affected families and those undergoing treatment in hospitals.

According to the Speaker, William Ruto has assured bereaved families of government assistance during the difficult period.

“President William Ruto has assured government support to the bereaved families,” Wetang’ula said in a statement.

He added that the County Government of Bungoma will cater for medical expenses for all survivors currently receiving treatment in health facilities.

Medical officials reported that at least 21 injured victims were admitted to different hospitals following the crash, with two patients in critical condition requiring specialised medical attention. Arrangements are underway to transfer them to facilities capable of handling complex trauma cases.

The accident occurred at Malaha Junction in Webuye, a busy section of road that connects western Kenya to major transport corridors.

Wetang’ula described the crash as part of a worrying trend of fatal accidents on Kenyan roads and called for stronger action to deal with reckless drivers.

“Road carnage continues to claim many lives, and as a country, we must urgently address this menace. We strongly condemn the reckless truck driver responsible for the tragic accident that claimed 15 lives,” he said.

The Speaker also urged the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to move swiftly to ensure that dangerous drivers are removed from the country’s roads.

“Our courts must also take the growing recklessness on our roads seriously. Those who endanger lives must face the full force of the law,” he added.

Meanwhile, leaders from Bungoma have formed a special committee to coordinate burial arrangements for the victims and support their families.

The committee will be led by Martin Wanyonyi Pepela, the Member of Parliament for Webuye East, and Catherine Wambilianga, the Bungoma Woman Representative.

They will work alongside Bungoma Deputy Governor Janepher Chemtai Mbatiany and Members of the County Assembly to organise burial plans and mobilise support for grieving families.

Local leaders said the committee will coordinate funeral arrangements to ensure the victims are given dignified send-offs.

As part of the mourning process, a special mass has been scheduled for March 16, 2026, in Webuye town.
The prayer service will bring together families, leaders and residents to honour those who lost their lives and to pray for the recovery of those still undergoing treatment in hospital.
