At least one person has been killed and seven others wounded in Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, while a Spanish fighter jet operating under NATO’s air-policing mission shot down a drone after it entered Romanian airspace.
A woman was killed and six others injured in an overnight missile and drone attack on Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to the regional governor.
Kyiv was also targeted, with authorities reporting a ballistic missile attack late on Saturday. One person was wounded, and fires broke out at non-residential sites in the Obolonsky and Holosiivskyi districts.
The latest strikes come as Russia continues its near-daily missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, more than four years after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Meanwhile, Romania’s Defence Ministry said a Spanish F-18 fighter jet had shot down a drone after it illegally entered Romanian airspace. The aircraft was operating as part of NATO’s air-policing mission in Romania.
Romanian authorities did not identify the origin of the drone. However, Romania has previously blamed Russia for similar incidents involving drones crossing its airspace.
The latest incident marks the fourth time a drone has been shot down in Romania this year. In July, a Romanian fighter jet brought down a suspected Russian drone, while in May a stray drone collided with a building in the Romanian city of Galati, injuring two people.
Romania shares a 634km border with Ukraine and has repeatedly reported Russian drones entering its airspace as Moscow intensifies its attacks on Ukrainian civilian and military infrastructure.
The spillover has raised concerns about the wider regional impact of the war, particularly for countries bordering Ukraine and those involved in NATO’s air-policing operations.
Russia has continued to launch long-range missile and drone strikes against targets across Ukraine, including areas far from the front lines.
The conflict has also affected major regional shipping routes, with mines and unmanned sea drones reportedly found floating in the Black Sea.
Civilian casualties in Ukraine have continued to rise. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission said July recorded the highest monthly civilian casualty figures since 2022, with at least 437 people killed and 2,610 injured.
The latest attacks were followed by reports of a large-scale Ukrainian drone incursion over Russia. Authorities in Moscow said more than 100 drones heading towards the capital had been shot down overnight.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said emergency services were deployed to locations where debris fell and reported that three people had been wounded.
Ukraine has increasingly carried out attacks against military, industrial and logistical facilities deep inside Russian territory. Kyiv has described such strikes as a response to Russia’s continued bombardment of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The latest exchange of attacks highlights the continuing escalation of long-range strikes, with both sides targeting locations far from the main battlefront.
The drone incident in Romania also underlines the risk that the conflict could spill further into neighbouring countries, as Russian and Ukrainian aerial attacks increasingly reach areas beyond Ukraine’s borders.
