New dad Wanyonyi beaten by a second in Oslo

Wanyonyi, who was running his first race since the birth of his daughter, Noellah, with fellow Olympian Nelly Chepchirchir, had earlier said that fatherhood is now his greatest motivation as he embarks on his 2026 season.

2024 Paris Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi was beaten by just a second in the men’s 800m at the 2026 Oslo Diamond League (Bislett Games) on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Bislett Stadium in Norway, finishing second in a time of 1:42.09.

Wanyonyi, who was running his first race since the birth of his daughter, Noellah, with fellow Olympian Nelly Chepchirchir, had earlier said that fatherhood is now his greatest motivation as he embarks on his 2026 season.

“It feels different to be a dad,” Wanyonyi told Olympics.com earlier this week. “It’s very special, and I now have a new motivation whenever I run.”

The Bislett Games, the sixth stop of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League season, saw Wanyonyi finish second behind American teenager Cooper Lutkenhaus, who edged the reigning Olympic champion at the finish line in a world-leading time of 1:42.08.

Olympic silver medallist Marco Arop of Canada finished third in 1:43.33, narrowly behind the top two in a tightly contested race.

Norway’s Tobias Grønstad came fourth in 1:43.61, followed by Australia’s Peter Bol in fifth (1:43.64). Belgium’s Eliott Crestan placed sixth in 1:43.85, France’s Gabriel Tual finished seventh in 1:44.79, while Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui closed the field in eighth place in 1:45.66.
