Murunga's Mwamba to field development squad in National Sevens Circuit

Mwamba Rugby Football Club (RFC) will field a development squad in the 2026 National Sevens Circuit, with head coach Paul Murunga saying the campaign will be used to nurture emerging talent ahead of the new Kenya Cup season.

Murunga, who guided Kenya Harlequin to the 2024 National Sevens Circuit title with 110 points to end the club's 12-year title drought, said the focus is on giving young players valuable experience rather than placing them under pressure.

"We have a young team for the sevens season, except Brian Mutugi, who has been called up to the provisional Shujaa squad. The majority of the players will be competing at this level for the first time, and I will not put them under pressure," said Murunga.

He added that the club is committed to building for the future after earning promotion back to the Kenya Cup for the 2026/27 season. Mwamba will begin their National Sevens Circuit campaign at the Prinsloo Sevens, scheduled for July 25-26 at the Nakuru Athletic Club.

Mwamba's youngsters have already gained valuable match experience after reaching the semi-finals of last weekend's KCB Met Sevens, where they lost 34-0 to hosts KCB.

They continue their preparations this weekend at the 2026 Ruff N' Tuff Sevens, set for Saturday, July 11, at the Red Lion Grounds, Ngong Racecourse, Nairobi. Mwamba have been drawn in Pool B alongside Nakuru RFC, Impala RFC and Daystar Falcons.

Murunga, who has also coached Kenya Harlequin and Homeboyz, said his immediate target is for Mwamba to consistently reach the Main Cup quarter-finals at every leg of the circuit.

Mwamba finished ninth overall in last season's National Sevens Circuit standings with 45 points. Their best performance came at the Dala Sevens, where they placed sixth to earn 12 points.

The result marked significant progress from the previous campaign, when the club finished 13th with 21 points.
