A brief interaction at the Kilgoris airstrip has thrust Raila Odinga Junior into the spotlight after a video of him greeting members of the public through a fence sparked speculation that he had attended President William Ruto’s family traditional ceremony in Narok County.
Raila Junior has now moved to clarify the incident, saying the video was recorded at the public airstrip in Kilgoris, shortly after he arrived by aircraft, and not at Ruto’s private residence as claimed by some people online.
Taking to his X account on Tuesday, Raila Junior explained that the fence seen in the footage was a normal safety barrier separating passengers and members of the public from the aircraft landing area.
His clarification followed growing online discussion about his presence in Kilgoris, with some critics connecting his visit to the recent Koito ceremony involving President Ruto’s daughter, Charlene Ruto, and Tanzanian technology entrepreneur Isaya Yunge.
“I have seen the video and the comments circulating about me greeting wananchi through a fence. For clarity: this was not at the President's private home. It took place at the public airstrip in Kilgoris,” he said.

According to Raila Junior, the encounter happened after he stepped off the aircraft and was recognised by a group of wananchi who waved at him and asked to greet him.
He said there was no planned political activity behind the interaction, describing it as a spontaneous exchange with members of the public.
“I responded to their greeting in the normal way one does with members of the public,” he stated.
The clarification comes against the backdrop of heightened attention around Raila Junior’s public activities since the death of his father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in India in October 2025 at the age of 80.
His increasing presence at public and community events has fuelled speculation that he could eventually enter elective politics.
In July 2026, Raila Junior hinted at the possibility of taking a new political path while speaking at a church fundraiser in Homa Bay. During the event, he spoke about starting a new journey and asked for support from members of the congregation.
He was later installed as head of the Odinga household during a traditional ceremony in Bondo, following the death of his father.
Raila Junior has also previously weighed in on national matters, including the rising cost of living and the need for greater dialogue between the government and citizens.
His latest clarification, however, focused mainly on the viral Kilgoris video and the speculation it generated.
The controversy emerged shortly after the high-profile Koito ceremony involving Charlene and Yunge at Intonna Heritage Farm in Narok.
Charlene, 33, was traditionally engaged to Yunge, 36, during the ceremony, which drew political leaders and other prominent guests to the Narok venue.
Yunge is a Tanzanian entrepreneur and co-founder and chief executive of SomaApps Technologies, the company behind SomaApp, a platform that connects African students with scholarship opportunities.
His work in technology and youth development has earned him several recognitions. He was named among Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30, won the 2017 GSMA Mobile Money Africa Hackathon and received the Queen’s Young Leaders Award in 2018.
He has also served as a UNICEF Africa Youth Ambassador and taken part in international youth forums, including the G8 Summit in Berlin.
The Koito ceremony attracted considerable public attention, with political figures and other prominent guests arriving at the Narok venue.
The traditional ceremony holds an important place in Kalenjin culture and generally involves discussions and arrangements between the families ahead of marriage.
Raila Junior, however, sought to make clear that his appearance in Kilgoris had no connection to the Ruto family event.
He also appeared to take the online attention in good humour, saying he was aware of the close interest people were taking in his movements.
“On a lighter note, I am pleased by the rigor and keen interest with which netizens follow my journey. I shall endeavour to update you more frequently,” he said.
His statement therefore sought to separate his brief interaction with wananchi at the Kilgoris airstrip from claims that he had visited the President’s private residence or taken part in the Ruto family’s traditional ceremony.
