Top tier women's football league side Zetech claims maiden KUSF title

Speaking after the final whistle, winning captain Sheril Muyera said she stepped up as a makeshift goalkeeper after her side was reduced to ten players following a red card to their goalkeeper, and still managed to secure a narrow 1-0 win.

Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) side Zetech University has won the women’s football category of the 12th edition of the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Ball Games playoffs, securing their maiden title. The tournament concluded on Sunday afternoon at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

Speaking after the final whistle, winning captain Sheril Muyera said she stepped up as a makeshift goalkeeper after her side was reduced to ten players following a red card to their goalkeeper, and still managed to secure a narrow 1-0 win.

“This is our maiden victory after losing last year’s final to KU. When we were reduced to ten players, I took up the goalkeeper role and managed to deliver,” said an excited Muyera. She added that Zetech will now represent Kenya at the upcoming East Africa University Games in Dodoma, Tanzania.

Daisy Kisuya scored the decisive goal for Zetech, capitalising on a loose ball after the MMUST goalkeeper spilled it, allowing her an easy tap-in.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) and Kenyatta University (KU) also emerged as dominant forces. MMUST clinched the women’s volleyball title for the fourth consecutive year with a convincing straight-sets victory over the University of Nairobi (UoN).

Kenyatta University dominated the netball category, winning both the men’s and women’s titles. In women’s handball, MMUST defeated Daystar University to claim the title, while Daystar’s men edged out KU 21-19.

United States International University Africa (USIU-A) recorded mixed results, with the women’s team winning 58-53 against African Nazarene University, while the men’s team lost 47-59 to Zetech.

In rugby 15s, Maseno University delivered a dominant performance to beat Moi University 35-13 and lift the title on Saturday.
