Treasury to launch 2027/28 budget preparation process on July 22

The National Treasury has announced that it will officially launch the preparation process for the 2027/28 Financial Year and Medium-Term Budget on July 22, marking the beginning of public consultations that will shape Kenya's next national budget.

According to a public notice published in the MyGov publication of July 14, 2026, the launch will take place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) from 8:30 a.m. and will bring together government officials, lawmakers, stakeholders and members of the public.

The Treasury said the exercise is being conducted in line with constitutional and legal requirements that guarantee public participation in budget-making.

"This process is conducted in accordance with Article 201 of the Constitution and Section 35(2) of the Public Finance Management Act (Cap. 412A), underscoring the role of public participation in financial decision-making," the notice states.

The event will begin with opening remarks from the Principal Secretary at the National Treasury and the Chairperson of the National Assembly's Budget and Appropriations Committee. This will be followed by the keynote address and official launch by the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury.

The launch will also feature presentations outlining the government's Medium-Term Plan IV (MTP IV), the medium-term macroeconomic outlook and highlights of the FY 2027/28 and Medium-Term Budget preparation process.

According to the Treasury, these presentations are expected to provide an overview of the country's economic direction and the priorities that will inform the next budget cycle.

The ministry has invited members of the public to participate in the process, describing the event as part of efforts to strengthen transparency and inclusiveness in the management of public finances.

"The event is open to the public to promote transparency and inclusiveness in budget formulation," the Treasury said, adding that members of the public are encouraged to "follow live updates and coverage via the National Treasury's official social media channels."

The budget preparation process is one of the key milestones in Kenya's public finance calendar, laying the foundation for government spending priorities for the 2027/28 financial year and the medium term.

The ministry urged Kenyans to participate in the exercise, saying, "Join us in shaping the future of our nation's financial planning."
