Stanbic Bank Kenya Limited has announced the appointment of Abraham Ongenge as its Acting Chief Executive, effective March 1, 2026. His appointment is subject to regulatory approval.
Ongenge currently serves as Head of Personal and Private Banking at Stanbic Bank Kenya, a role he has held since November 2023. The bank highlighted his successful career within the Standard Bank Group, where he has held leadership positions across Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda.
“He began his journey as a Financial Accountant and advanced to Chief Finance and Value Officer,” Stanbic said in a statement on March 11, 2026.
He has also served as a Finance Director in a local bank, adding to his experience in the financial sector.
Ongenge holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance from the University of Nairobi with First Class Honors. He is a Certified Public Accountant in Kenya (CPA(K)), a member of ICPAK, and also holds CPA(U) certification in Uganda.
He has further strengthened his skills through professional development, including a Digital Strategies for Business certificate from Columbia Business School and the Advanced Management Program from Strathmore Business School and IESE Spain.
His appointment follows the retirement of Patrick Mweheire as Chief Executive and Director on February 28, 2026 and the appointment of Dr. Joshua Oigara as Chief Executive and Director of Stanbic Holdings Plc, effective March 1, 2026.
Dr. Oigara currently serves as Standard Bank Regional Chief Executive for East Africa, overseeing operations in Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, and will continue in this regional role alongside his leadership at Stanbic Holdings.
