EPRA begins hunt for Director General to lead energy regulation

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has started the search for a new Director General who will take charge of regulating Kenya’s electricity, petroleum, coal and renewable energy sectors.

In a notice published on MyGov on August 18, 2026, EPRA said it was looking for a “suitably qualified, experienced, result oriented and highly motivated” Kenyan to fill the position.

The successful applicant will provide strategic leadership at the authority and guide its operations in line with EPRA’s strategic plan.

The Director General will oversee the technical and economic regulation of electricity utilities involved in the generation, importation, transmission, distribution, supply and use of electrical energy.

The holder of the position will also supervise the regulation of petroleum activities, covering importation, refining, exportation, transportation, storage and sale of petroleum products.

The role will further include guiding the regulation, monitoring and supervision of upstream petroleum operations and infrastructure across the country.

EPRA will also task the new Director General with overseeing the regulation and production, conversion, distribution, supply, marketing and use of renewable energy.

The areas covered include solar, wind, geothermal, bioenergy, tidal and hydropower.

Beyond sector regulation, the authority said the new boss will be expected to promote good governance and strengthen internal monitoring and control systems.

To qualify, applicants must be Kenyan citizens holding a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in engineering, physical sciences, law, finance, environmental studies, economics or energy.

Candidates must have at least seven years of senior-level management experience, including a minimum of two years’ experience in petroleum and energy.

They must also hold a professional qualification and be members of a professional body in good standing, while meeting the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.

A Master’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, law, finance, economics, environmental studies or energy will be an added advantage.

Interested candidates are required to submit their applications, together with relevant certificates, by email to [email protected] by 5pm on September 9, 2026.

The successful candidate will serve for three years, with the contract eligible for renewal once for a similar period, subject to satisfactory performance and the mandatory retirement age.

The recruitment follows the appointment of Dr Joseph Oketch as Acting Director General several months after Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria resigned from the position in April.

Kiptoo resigned together with then Petroleum Principal Secretary Mohamed Liban and Kenya Pipeline Company Managing Director Joe Sang as investigations were launched into alleged manipulation of fuel stock data and irregular procurement of emergency fuel.
