Golf: Chege beats Kibugu to win maiden Sunshine Development Tour title

Samuel Chege of Thika Sports Club stunned tournament favourite Njoroge Kibugu to win his maiden Sunshine Development Tour- East Africa Swing title after claiming the Absa Invitational, the fourth leg of the Tour, at Nyali Golf & Country Club in Mombasa County on Saturday.

The victory earned Chege Sh400,000 from the tournament's Sh2 million prize purse.

Chege, who started the final round in ninth place, three shots off the lead, mounted a remarkable comeback with a near-flawless six-under-par 65 to finish the tournament on seven-under-par 206, the lowest total of the week.

"I'm really happy to get my first Sunshine Development Tour title. After the first round, I knew I had to stay patient and keep believing because there was still a lot of golf to play. I struck the ball really well over the last two rounds, gave myself chances and managed to take them," said Chege, crediting his patience and determination for the victory.

His final round featured seven birdies on the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 11th, 16th and 17th holes, with his only blemish coming on the 12th. The victory capped a remarkable turnaround after an opening-round 75 had left him well down the leaderboard.

Muthaiga Golf Club's Greg Snow and defending champion Njoroge Kibugu of Windsor Golf Hotel & Country Club shared second place on five-under-par 208.

Snow carded a final-round two-under-par 69, making birdies on the 5th, 7th, 11th, and 17th holes. However, bogeys on the 4th and 6th denied him a stronger title challenge.

Kibugu, who began the day as the overnight leader seeking to successfully defend his Nyali title, closed with a one-under-par 70. After bogeys on the 4th, 7th and 10th holes, he rallied with birdies on the 11th, 15th, 16th, and 17th to remain in contention until the closing stages.

Meanwhile, Celestin Nsanzuwera of Kigali Golf Resort finished as the highest-placed foreign player in fourth position on three-under-par 210 after posting a final-round one-under-par 70.

John Lejirma and Mohit Mediratta shared fifth place on two-under-par 211.

Chege received Sh400,000 for the victory, while Snow and Kibugu each earned Sh180,000.

The Absa Invitational attracted a strong field of 80 golfers from across East Africa and beyond, with players competing for a share of the prize money as well as valuable Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), and Sunshine Development Tour Order of Merit points, which are crucial for qualification to the main Sunshine Tour.
