Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata has declared his political future will be under Rigathi Gachagua's Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), giving the opposition a major lift as political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election begin to gather pace.

The governor announced that he will seek a second term on a DCP ticket, saying his decision will not affect his role within the opposition's Linda Mwananchi movement, where he intends to continue working alongside other leaders.

"Come 2027, I will defend my seat via DCP but remain a bridge that connects with Linda Mwananchi," Kang'ata said.

He also reminded supporters that he had predicted Gachagua's political rise nearly two years ago, saying he made that observation on July 20, 2024, long before the next General Election campaigns gathered momentum.

Kang'ata made the announcement at Gachagua's Wamunyoro residence, where the former Deputy President officially received him into the party in a meeting attended by supporters.

Welcoming the Murang'a governor, Gachagua described his arrival as a return to familiar political ground.

"Welcome home, Governor Irungu Kang'ata, where you belong," Gachagua said.

The DCP leader later reaffirmed the governor's membership, saying the party was steadily attracting leaders from different parts of the country.

"Today at Wamunyoro Residence, I was pleased to receive my younger brother, Governor Irungu Kang'ata, Governor of Murang'a County, as a member of our party, DCP, the party of the moment and the future."

Kang'ata's decision is expected to strengthen DCP's presence in the Mt Kenya region, where Gachagua has been working to rally support following his split with President William Ruto's administration.

According to Gachagua, the party has continued to register growth since it was launched and is now preparing to field candidates across the country in the August 10, 2027 General Election.

"Since its inception, the DCP Party has grown into a strong national party with millions of followers and thousands of prospective aspirants ahead of the 2027 polls," he said.

He added that DCP had already secured representation in both Parliament and county assemblies and was aiming for a bigger presence after the next elections.

"We now have a Member of the National Assembly and three Members of the County Assemblies from across the country, reflecting the face of Kenya. As we prepare for the next General Election, we are determined to be the majority party in both Houses and the majority across county assemblies," Gachagua said.
