MPs push for digital hubs to create jobs for youth

The National Assembly Committee on Communication, Information and Innovation is pushing for faster completion and expansion of digital hubs to help young people access jobs, skills and business opportunities.

The committee, chaired by Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie, made the call during an inspection of digital hubs in Kilifi and Likoni constituencies on August 29, 2026.

The MPs say the centres should go beyond basic computer training and become spaces where young people can work, build businesses and develop technology.

“We do not want our young people to remain consumers of technology. We want them to become developers, innovators and manufacturers of digital solutions,” Kiarie said.

The committee also called for training programmes to focus on emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and to provide young innovators with intellectual property protection.

Bomachoge Chache MP Alfah Miruka said digital training must translate into employment and business opportunities.

“The training we provide must translate into real jobs and businesses. It is not enough to train young people if the skills they acquire cannot help them earn a living,” Miruka said.

The MPs proposed transforming future hubs into one-stop centres with incubation facilities, workspaces, internet-enabled computer centres and links to financial institutions.

Mbooni MP Erastus Kivasu said, “This should be more than a computer lab. It should be a place where an idea can be developed into a business, registered and connected to financing.”

The committee wants every constituency to eventually have access to digital infrastructure, bringing employment and innovation opportunities closer to young people in rural and underserved areas.
