Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia arrested after night at RMS offices

Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia has been arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after spending the night at Royal Media Services (RMS), where he had sought refuge over fears of imminent arrest following remarks he made at a political rally.

The legislator remained inside the media house from Sunday evening after appearing on Inooro TV's Kiririmbi programme, claiming hooded officers had surrounded the premises and erected roadblocks to arrest him.

"After my Kiririmbi Show this evening a contingent of Police have surrounded Royal Media Studios and erected road blocks with intentions of arresting me! I will NOT BE INTIMIDATED whatsoever," Kaguchia wrote on social media.

The contingent remained outside the media house overnight before DCI officers arrested the MP on Monday morning.

Regional DCI Commander Daniel Kandie confirmed Kaguchia would be taken to the agency's Valley Road offices in Nairobi for questioning.

Speaking to Citizen TV before his arrest, Kaguchia denied any wrongdoing, insisting he was being investigated over political remarks that had been deliberately misrepresented.

"I saw a lot of hype yesterday by the government about my political utterances that I did on Saturday in one of the political rallies, which I saw were being pushed as being inflammatory. That is an issue that falls under the purview of NCIC," he said.

The MP maintained that he had not received any formal summons from investigators and said he was willing to appear before the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) if required.

"I have not received any summons. All I have received is social media posts from Itumbi and some of the other government-leaning MPs which were also twisted to fit a certain narrative. I have no problem presenting myself to NCIC," he added.

Kaguchia also accused Presidential Adviser Dennis Itumbi and several pro-government leaders from the Mt Kenya region of amplifying what he described as a distorted interpretation of his remarks.

His arrest follows growing criticism over comments he made during a political gathering in Kieni over the weekend.

Speaking in his native language, the Mukurweini MP appeared to warn Mt Kenya residents against supporting President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, claiming those who voted for the President would be "smoked out" from their homes.

The remarks triggered sharp condemnation from political leaders and legal experts. Presidential Adviser Dennis Itumbi described the comments as undemocratic, while Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi said such rhetoric has no place in Kenya's politics.

The remarks also sparked widespread debate on social media, with critics accusing Kaguchia of promoting political intolerance.

However, his supporters argue that the comments have been taken out of context and misrepresented, maintaining that the MP's words have been selectively interpreted for political purposes.
