Today, we soldier on! MP Kaguchia speaks after night in police cell

Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia has insisted that his arrest will not derail his political course, emerging from an overnight stay in police custody with a message of defiance as he prepared to appear before the Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday morning.

The legislator, who spent Monday night at Kamukunji Police Station, addressed Kenyans through his social media pages, saying the experience had only reinforced his determination to continue pursuing justice.

“Good morning! A night in the police cell has only strengthened our resolve and commitment to justice,” Kaguchia said. “Today, we soldier on!”

He added that he was expected before the Milimani Law Courts at 8.30 am.

Kaguchia was taken into custody on Monday before being escorted to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters. He was later moved to Kamukunji Police Station, where he remained overnight awaiting further action.

His lawyers said they were yet to receive formal communication on the grounds of his arrest, adding that investigators had not disclosed the offences the MP was expected to answer to.

The legal team also protested the seizure of Kaguchia's mobile phone and complained that access to their client had been restricted after his arrest.

As of Tuesday morning, police had not publicly revealed the charges, if any, that would be brought against the legislator.

Before he was arrested, Kaguchia had remained at the Royal Media Services premises after appearing in a television interview on Monday evening. It was reported that he stayed there after learning detectives were allegedly waiting outside to arrest him over comments he is said to have made while discussing political issues.

His detention has since attracted sharp political reactions, with a section of leaders accusing the government of using law enforcement agencies to target opponents.

They argued that justice should be applied fairly and consistently, saying no Kenyan should face different treatment because of political affiliation.

Supporters of the MP also staged demonstrations in parts of Mukurwe-ini Constituency, demanding his immediate release and insisting the arrest was driven by politics rather than the law.

The protests added fresh pressure as the case continued to draw national attention.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua joined the debate, saying the arrest would instead strengthen Kaguchia's political standing and make him more popular.

Gachagua later stated that the High Court had directed that the MP be released upon payment of a police cash bail of Sh100,000.

In a statement, he alleged that officers at Kamukunji Police Station had failed to act despite the court order having already been served.

He urged the officers to obey the directive, warning that continued detention of the MP could expose them to personal liability for contempt of court.

The former Deputy President maintained that the court order had already reached the officers and called for Kaguchia's immediate release as the legal process unfolded.
