Moja Expressway Company has cautioned motorists against carrying more passengers than legally allowed on the Nairobi Expressway, emphasizing that overloading vehicles is strictly prohibited.
The operator said adhering to vehicle capacity is crucial for the safety of both drivers and passengers using the highway.
In a statement released on Monday, Moja Expressway said: “Carrying passengers in overloaded vehicles is strictly prohibited on the Nairobi Expressway. Kindly adhere to the legal capacity for a safe and smooth trip.”
The Sh87 billion Nairobi Expressway, inaugurated by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022, was designed to reduce congestion along major routes including Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, and Waiyaki Way.
The 27 km toll road, which runs from Mlolongo to the James Gichuru junction, features 11 interchanges at key points such as Mlolongo, the Standard Gauge Railway, JKIA, Eastern Bypass, Southern Bypass, Capital Centre, Haile Selassie Avenue, Museum Hill, Westlands, and James Gichuru Road.
The expressway has 11 tolling stations, 54 toll plazas, and 54 cameras along the route, with 126 additional cameras inside the toll plazas, allowing for advanced monitoring of traffic and safety compliance. The dual carriageway includes 18.2 km at ground level and 8.9 km elevated, is four lanes wide, and has a design speed of 80 km per hour.
Moja Expressway Company Limited said it aims to transform public transport by introducing intelligent and connected expressway systems, modernizing road infrastructure, and offering integrated solutions for operation and maintenance.
The operator highlighted its mission to provide comfort, convenience, and connectivity while prioritizing safety, efficiency, and innovation.
The company also underlined its commitment to developing and managing modern road networks across the East African Community. The Nairobi Expressway, one of China’s flagship projects in Kenya under the Belt and Road Initiative, has cut travel time from JKIA to Nairobi CBD to just 20 minutes, compared to up to two hours in heavy traffic.
China Roads and Bridges Construction is set to operate and maintain the expressway for 30 years to recoup its investment.
